With libretto by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's chidhood friend, Pastor Julius Schubring, "Paulus" was premiered in 1836. Paulus is composed of two parts, the killing of St. Stephen and the conversion of St. Paul. How Lovely Are The Messengers is the fourth song of the second part.
